1940 sperren die Deutschen den polnischen Pianisten Wladyslaw Szpilman zusammen mit 445 000 anderen Juden in das Warschauer Ghetto. Während seine Familienangehörigen 1942 in ein Vernichtungslager gebracht werden, rettet ihm ein Kollaborateur im letzten Augenblick das Leben, und ausgerechnet ein deutscher Offizier bewahrt ihn Ende 1944 vor dem Verhungern.
