Planet Erde, irgendwann in der Zukunft. Fast die gesamte Menschheit ist von sogenannten Seelen besetzt. Diese nisten sich in die menschlichen Körper ein und übernehmen sie vollständig – nur wenige Menschen leisten noch Widerstand und überleben in den Bergen, Wüsten und Wäldern. Eine von ihnen ist Melanie (Saoirse Ronan). Als sie schließlich doch von einer Sucherin (Diane Kruger) gefasst wird, wehrt sie sich mit aller Kraft dagegen, aus ihrem Körper verdrängt zu werden und teilt ihn fortan notgedrungen mit der Seele Wanda. Verzweifelt kämpft sie darum, ihren Geliebten Jared (Max Irons) wiederzufinden, der sich mit anderen Rebellen in der Wüste versteckt hält. Und im Bann von Melanies leidenschaftlichen Gefühlen und Erinnerungen sehnt sich auch Wanda mehr und mehr nach Jared, den sie nie getroffen hat ...
Der ungewöhnliche Kampf zweier Frauen, die sich einen Körper teilen müssen, eine hinreißende Liebesgeschichte und die wohl erste Dreiecksgeschichte mit nur zwei Körpern.
